Reducing our absolute emissions

We want to claim NetZero in 2050, but what is even more interesting is the mid-term target we have set to cut emissions from our bakeries and transport by 50% in 2030, also known as scope 1 and 2. It is not an easy job we have set out to do. However, we believe it is doable when we collaborate across our entire business. Unibake has an annual footprint of 800,000 tons CO2e. It’s interesting that 89% of these total emissions derive from scope 3 - emissions that we do not control - and that the raw materials we use in our products (flour, seeds, butter, palm oil, vegetable oils, eggs and so forth) count for no less than 62% of those emissions.Of this, flour alone stands for 23% - a footprint that is hard for us to change because it starts outside of our business – in the field. Over the past years our good colleagues in Lantmännen have gained strong experience with climate friendlier solutions which provide us with a unique opportunity to influence the flour footprint in our bakeries. This is an example of how we strongly benefit from the Field to Fork value chain that we are part of.

As a reflection of our strategy to build trust and deliver sustained outcomes for our owners and customers, we’re committed to leading by example. Agriculture and food production account for approximately one third of global greenhouse gas emissions and achieving net zero by 2050 at the latest will involve big changes in the entire value chain from field to fork.

 

 

  • Scope 1 are emissions controlled through our own operations
  • Scope 2 are emissions caused from the energy consumption. We consume the energy, but the CO2 is generated elsewhere
  • Scope 3 are emissions linked to our business activities, but not in our direct control, but with the possibility to influence for example raw material production, transport, business travel etc.

 

Since 2009 Unibake has reduced its relative greenhouse gas emission on Scope 1+2 with 32%. However, working on Scope 1 + 2 is far from enough; 62% of our CO2e emissions start in the field with the raw materials we use. To strengthen our impact, we must expand our view to include the entire value chain meaning also Scope 3 emissions.

In 2021 we committed to SBTi and in July 2023 the SBTi approved our submission

This means that sustainability is incorporated into our business strategy and that our science-based targets are part of the overarching business ambition.
